The record-breaking Australian Powerball Jackpot has been won tonight. Lotterywest officials have confirmed the winning numbers: 5, 21, 11, 38, 2 and Powerball 33 as millions of lottery players anxiously awaited the outcome of the biggest prize ever offered - and won in Australian lottery history!
For six consecutive weeks, OZ Powerball ticket holders failed to match the winning numbers, resulting in tonight’s historic $50 million jackpot. Lotterywest says ticket sales soared to as high as $6000 a minute, a few hours before the big draw.
They estimated that about half of West Australia's population bought tickets for the $50-million Oz Powerball draw.
This is the second time in a matter of weeks that an Australian lottery record has been broken. The earlier record was on April 29 when OZ Lotto was won at $47.98 million. The huge prize was shared by just 2 winning tickets, both from Sydney's western suburbs. One was by a young man who got to claim $24 Million, the other a syndicate of laboratory workers .
On the other hand, Australian Powerball's previous jackpot record was at $30 million. Established only in 1996, Oz Powerball has already paid out three $30 million jackpots- the most recent one in October, 2007. This could still be the biggest individual prize won in that game...
Thursday's jackpot has been reset to the minimum $3,000,000.
